Renault Formula 1 test driver Sergey Sirotkin took pole in Germany with three minutes left to run.
After setting a 1:22:193, Sirotkin headed back to the pits as he watched the rest of the session unfold. Practice pace-sitter Pierre Gasly also was pit-bound with five minutes remaining having set a lap just 0.016 off pole.
Raffaele Marciello slotted into third for Russian Time ahead of fellow Italian, Antonio Giovinazzi.
Britain’s Oliver Rowland and Alex Lynn start fifth and sixth respectively, whilst Norman Nato crossed the line to qualify seventh.
Nicholas Latifi and Jordan King are eighth and ninth whilst completing the last of the runners to be within 0.3 seconds of pole position. Marvin Kirchhofer rounds out the top ten.
Reinforced regulations on track limits meant that several drivers fell victim to having times deleted, Luca Ghiotto, Gustav Malja and Nabil Jeffri were amongst the casualties.
The top 14 runners were all within one second of each other, proving that this season of GP2 is still as competitive as ever.
