After checking the car of Pierre Gasly following today’s Feature Race, the stewards found that the fire extinguisher of car #21 was empty. The stewards considered this did not comply with the safety regulations.
Gasly has thus been excluded from today’s result and will start tomorrow’s Sprint Race from the back of the grid; team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi will start on reverse pole despite starting the Feature from P22.
Despite the penalty, Gasly still leads the championship standings by six points, ahead of Sergey Sirotkin and Giovinazzi. The top eight drivers are covered by just 30 points, as opposed to last years 100 points separating the top two at this point.
Russian Time’s Artem Markelov and MP Motorsport’s Daniel de Jong have also been penalised for colliding with separate drivers at turn 6. Both have received 5-place grid penalty; since neither finished today’s Feature Race, both will start tomorrow’s race from the pit lane.
